Deadpool Film Talk

After everyone and their Grandma talked about it over its opening weekend, I'm gonna talk about it a week later! Thank god, I'm not called The Shaman of Timing...

Greetings Ladies and Gents! It is I, The Shaman of Animation back again with some Superhero Talk! Last weekend, for my 21st birthday, I saw Deadpool. And now, like three days later, I'm gonna talk about it. Not only that, but I'm also gonna give my quick thoughts on the effect this movie's success could have on future Superhero films. So, let's dive on in!

Deadpool is both a revenge and a love story starring Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, the merc with a mouth on the hunt after movie villain Ajax A.K.A Francis in an attempt to fix his face after Francis's horrible tests on Wade (Which Wade originally thought that he was going to get help to cure his cancer) triggered a mutation within him and made him look like, to quote the movie: "An avocado that had sex with a much older avocado." so that Wade can return to his love Vanessa.

So, I know as much about Deadpool as much as 90 percent of people that do know him do: and that is he breaks the fourth wall and shoots stuff, and does a lot of "LolRandom" things; and the one thing that surprised me the most when I left the movie theater was just how much heart this movie had. It does a great job humanizing Wade Wilson as opposed to what you see him portrayed as in Internet memes or the people who cosplay him at Conventions. Wade isn't a good guy, but as you go through the movie, you understand his motives and you want to cheer for him.

Speaking of Wade, let's talk about his actor, Ryan Reynolds. This film marks Reynolds's second attempt at playing Deadpool (the first being X-men Origins Wolverine back in 2009). You often hear that certain actors are born to play this superhero like with Robert Downey Jr. with Iron Man or Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. We can add Ryan Reynolds to that list. It's like the stars aligned, formed Deadpool's image; and the star made merc with a mouth shot a beam of light from his penis (Because if Deadpool were to fire a beam from any body part it'd definitely be from his penis) down onto Mr. Reynolds. Even when Deadpool was nothing more that just test footage for a film that got leaked on the internet, this man fully immerses himself as the character, and he hits all those vulgar, comedic, and over-the-top notes you'd expect from the character. And you can tell, from his performance, that this was something that Reynolds was fully passionate about doing this character justice. I tip my hat to you Mr. Reynolds. After three failed attempts at Comic Book movies, you finally got that W.

To take things back to the comedy, it's exactly what you'd hope for in a movie about Deadpool; You've got PLENTY of fourth wall humor, plenty of situation humor, and the dialogue between Wade and the other characters in the movie. And the action? That's pretty good too. Although, I'll let everyone know now, that the best fight in the film is in all the trailers, and it's literally the first act, and it's never really topped sadly. But don't let that deter you, the action is still pretty fun.

I could go on and on about what I love about this movie, but it's something that if you haven't seen by now, then go for it. Some could argue that the secondary cast and the villain weren't good, but honestly with a character as radical as Deadpool, every other character just needs to do their job for the movie to function and that's what the film accomplishes.

In it's opening weekend, Deadpool made double its budget back and has broken box office records for R rated films. The last Rated R comic films to be this successful were the Blade movies; and after killing it in the box office, you're gonna see more studios take more chances on R Rated Comic films. Hell, right now, there's a huge push to make The Wolverine 3 Rated R. I think in the future, as far as the X-Men movies are concerned, Deadpool is gonna spark a change for the X-Men. Almost all X-Men movies have had the same aesthetic and the same problems over the years because they've mainly been following one man's vision for The X-Men: Bryan Singer. I believe after the positive critical reception of Deadpool, after X-men Apocalypse comes out, we're gonna see a change in the X-Men films. I believe in a few years, we're gonna see a new up and coming director give us a brand new take on the X-men, new brighter costumes, smaller scale, back to basics stories. Wolverine not in the spotlight. The future is looking bright for what Comic Book movies could do in the next few years, and it's crazy as hell to think that a movie about Deadpool could be the one to spark this change...

Til next time folks, I'm The Shaman of Animation. Take Care...
