These two look like giant action figures in this film, and I love it!
Greetings Ladies and Gents! It is I, The Shaman of Animation! Welcome back to the Road to BVS folks. On our previous two stops, we've taken looks at Batman and Superman on their own independent adventures. I feel it's only right for this stop, we take a look at a film where the two team up. Without further ado peeps, here is Superman/Batman Public Enemies!
Superman/Batman Public Enemies is an adaptation of the comic storyline of the same name. Superman and Batman must work together to take down a giant meteor while also dealing with President Lex Luthor, who's put a billion dollar bounty on the Man of Steel's head.
Kevin Conroy (Batman The Animated Series), Tim Daly, and Clancy Brown (Both from Superman The Animated Series) all return to reprise their respective roles and it's like they never left (which, in the case of Kevin Conroy is probably true). These three put their best foot forward and deliver great performances; and it helps plenty when they have such great material to work with.
The back and forth banter between Batman and Superman in this film is one of the best parts of it for me. Their night and day personalities really play off of each other well and results in some good barbs thrown at one another; and in a film where it's literally them vs the world, that camaraderie that they share definitely gives these two characters more substance to their relationship.
Our main antagonist for the movie, Lex Luthor, is at his most egotistical and manipulative which aided by Clancy Brown's awesome voice acting, makes for a very fun Lex Luthor to watch. He's always been a character with a God complex, someone that wants and thinks he deserves the love of humanity and to be on a level higher than them, not some alien in a bright blue costume; and he's willing to go to any means to fulfill that image of himself. That is on full display in this film as he's not only The President of The U.S. and he fixed the economic slump the country's in, but he uses his position of power to try and get rid of Superman once and for all while simultaneously working on a way to get rid of the meteor so he can have the glory.
In Public Enemies, President Luthor enlists some heroes to aid him and his missions and the film briefly brings up the topic of what is right and who can be trusted. Before his presidency, Lex was a scummy guy that couldn't be trusted. But when he became President and started helping the economy, he won more people, including various heroes, over to his side, while Superman becomes the hero that's trust his colleagues have for him starts to wane; and using characters like Captain Atom, Major Force, and Power Girl to bring up that moral ambiguity the film slightly touches on instead of the bigger tiered DC heroes does add strength and another, albeit smaller, layer to this movie.
And finally, I would be wrong if I didn't bring up the fights in this movie. Because Bats and Supes are on the run from the law thanks to the bounty on Superman's head, heroes and villains alike are gunning after the two and this results in fisticuffs aplenty; and because I can't think of any fancy way to say the fights are cool, I'm just gonna say the fights are cool. Although some (Mainly those involving Batman) I do have to call shenanigans on.
When it comes to Batman and Superman, many fans (And I'm guilty of this myself) focus more on who would beat who in a fight. Hell, in less than two week an entire movie is gonna be centered around this topic. But we often overlook just how great these two are when they're working together for a cause. Superman/Batman Public Enemies serves as a means of letting fans know that watching The Caped Crusader and The Last Son of Krypton fighting side by side can be just as, if not even more fun than watching them go head to head. Fun action, Entertaining dialogue, some positive third thing, it is without a doubt a must watch.
That's all for this stop on The Road to BVS people. Be on the lookout as next time, we'll be taking a look at a fan favorite: Batman Under The Red Hood.
Til Next Time folks, I'm The Shaman of Animation: Take Care...
