Sonic Boom: First Impressions (Eps. 1-6)

Greetings Ladies and Gentlemen! It is I, the Shaman of Animation. Last October saw a big announcement for video game icon Sonic the Hedgehog: Sonic Boom. Sonic Boom is a spin-off from the main Sonic Series that brings an all new take on the blue blur (this of course also means the designs you see above). Sonic's no stranger to animated series as this show marks the fifth time he's been on the small screen. Now that the show is three weeks in, how is it? That's what I'm here to discuss

Sonic Boom is a comedy-action series (More comedy than action) that follows an eleven minute "one-and-done" episode format. It follows our hero Sonic and his friends Tails, Amy, Knuckles, and new to Sonic franchise, Sticks, as they go on adventures and battle the evil scientist Dr. Eggman

First off, Sonic Boom from a visual standpoint just looks great. You can tell a good amount of money was put into this series, A lot of all CG animated series take a few episodes to even a whole season to find its niche when it comes to its texturing and facial expressions (Take a look at the first season from the current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cartoon on Nick for example). From the get go, Sonic Boom brings you very vibrant and colorful environments, It will feel like you're watching cut scenes from the video games, which are always great to look at. The designs for the characters, for the most part, also look great. They perfectly match each character's personality and traits (Sonic being the speedy adventurer, Tails being the tech guy, Knuckles being the muscle of the group, etc.)

The voice acting for Boom is very top notch, easily some of the best in the entire franchise. The cast from the games from 2010 to now (sans Kate Higgins as Tails who's been replaced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey) have returned to reprise their roles and they do a great job. Extra points to Mike Pollock, the voice of Dr. Eggman. He's been voicing the character for over a decade and he sounds better than ever. His dialogue is easily some of the best of the show so far.

Speaking of Dialogue, the show does well with this also. All the characters' interactions are fun to see and they play off each other nicely. As Sonic Boom is a comedy series first, the comedy is decent. Nothing gut-bustingly hilarious, but you will get a good couple of chuckles from each episode.

Now for what I feel is the bad of the show. I wouldn't really say it's bad, but it's more personal nitpicks from myself.

First off, with this being a brand new continuity in the Sonic franchise, I wish we could have seen just HOW Sonic and the gang met and how they got to the point they are in the beginning of the show. When the show starts, they already know each other and they're buddies (and from what I've seen, the game doesn't go into detail there either).

Another thing that concerns me is newcomer Sticks the Badger. The show so far is going with the style of wacky random humor with the character in the sense that she does and says very strange things cause 'Hey! Normal people don't do that. HA HA HA!!' As it is so far, I think the show is doing a decent job of not going super over the top with her character and the style of humor, she even has some good lines from time to time. I just don't want it to dominate the episodes she's in as the two Sticks-centric episodes we've had so far have been some of the weaker ones.

And finally...one of THE BIGGEST sins this show has is how can you have a show titled Sonic Boom...and THIS ISN'T the theme song?!

The goal of Sonic Boom was to introduce the blue blur to a new generation and, in my humble opinion, the TV show succeeds at doing so (The game...not so much...) It has everything kids would love, bright colors, decent humor and action (the little that's there) and just all around fun. It's a Saturday Morning cartoon at its finest and one that young ones will enjoy and older Sonic fans can find some entertainment out of. If you have time, check out Sonic Boom...when the episodes are online cause there's no way in hell anyone over the age of ten is waking up at seven in the morning to watch a cartoon...
