Why Suicide Squad is the most important movie in The DC Extended Universe

Greetings Ladies and Gents! It is I, The Shaman of Animation back again with some more Superhero talk! Comic Con came and went folks, and with it came some sweet Comic Book movie trailers. One of which we'll be talking about today and why it has more impact on its universe than some may think. That's right people, today we are discussing the Suicide Squad Movie! As we all know, Suicide Squad will take place August of next year and will be the movie following Batman vs Superman. Here are the three reasons why this movie is so important to the DC Movie Universe.

1. Its success proves that WB/DC CAN make movies and market characters beside Batman and Superman

One only has to look at WB/DC's track record in the last several years to understand this point. Batman and Superman (More the former than the latter) are the big money makers when it comes to DC and that all includes: Comics, movies, animated series/movies, and games. These two are the safe bet for Warner Bros. and all their attempts at making movies with other DC characters (Green Lantern, Catwoman, Steel) proved to be huge flops. Suicide Squad is a movie where almost of the characters will be on the big screen for the very first time; and if this movie starring characters that the majority of people going to watch these movies don't know is a success, then we can breath a little easier with the movies on the big names in the DC Universe.

2. It gives WB/DC a chance to one up the MCU with their villains

As great as The MCU is, it's a general agreement that their villains are severely lacking. If you aren't Loki, The Kingpin, or Ultron (and Ultron is very arguable) then you're a one dimensional throwaway. DC Comics have some of the greatest Supervillains and Suicide Squad, a movie about a team of villains gives WB/DC a chance to flex their big villain muscles. This movie serves as the introduction to fan favorite character Harley Quinn, a character who fell in love with The Joker and because of said love, became mentally demented. And the movie is not shying away from her origin or the fact that she was constantly abused physically (and mentally) by The Joker. And if that isn't enough for you, there's the character of Deadshot, a character who accidentally killed his brother while trying to protect him from their abusive father, a man who wants to do right by his child (or children depending on the interpretation). And finally there is Amanda Waller who in many interpretations, while being an antagonistic character herself, uses her underhanded means to ensure the people's security and protection These three characters I listed, if written correctly, can bring complexity to villains that have yet to be seen from the MCU on the big screen. Which, for a company that's dead set on being different from Marvel, is a very good thing.

And The Final Reason that this movie is so important is:
It's the first movie to feel like it's part of a universe

I'm sure by now, you've all seen the trailer to Suicide Squad by now and how Amanda Waller makes mentions of Superman and the short scene of Batman on top of a car. Those two little moments are what make this movie so important: While Batman vs Superman is the movie that introduces the fact that there are many superheroes that exist in this universe outside of Superman, Suicide Squad, excuse my bad analogy here, is the first piece of tissue that really connects everything. It shows that the League exists in more than just one movie and are off taking care of other issues while the Suicide Squad is its own standalone thing. It's a lot like the scene at the very tail end of The Incredible Hulk where Tony Stark shows up. Scenes like that are good for world building.

And if I can talk about Comparisons and connective tissue, Amanda Waller to me will very well be that for this universe. No doubt the character will play a much larger roll in the larger scheme of the universe. I see her as someone in this universe who is very weary of the League and what would happen if they turned to the other side. So much so that she makes contingency plans for them: She could be the leader behind Project Cadmus (This genetic engineering project), or she could've actually been working with Lex Luthor in BVS and we just didn't know it. Amanda Waller could very much be the Nick Fury for DC's Extended Universe.

In conclusion, while the fate of the DC Extended Universe depends on Batman vs Superman's success, it also very much needs to keep its momentum going. Which is why Suicide Squad is such an essential film in this universe. Because if it doesn't do well, it may create more problems than we may think.

Til next time folks, I'm The Shaman of Animation saying: Why couldn't we get Harley Quinn in her classic costume for the Movie?!

You could've even gone with The Assault on Arkham look! That was a perfect modernized look!!

Take Care...
