I've held off of another DBS discussion long enough and with the new info we've gotten, the wait has paid off!!
The synopsis for the first episode of Dragon Ball Super has been released. To paraphrase that synopsis, after the defeat of Majin Buu, Chi-Chi tells Goku to get a job and because of which, our hero becomes a Radish Farmer; also Goten and Trunks are on the hunt to get Videl a present as she and Gohan are soon to marry.
I'm liking the synopsis for this first episode. It gives the feeling that DBS, at least in its early episodes seem to be going with more of a slice of life and adventurous vibe, which was something that I did want to see from the series when I talked about it last month. It's been joked about how Goku never has a job and how his family is still financially secure for the most part, so it'll be funny to see him in the working force.
Fans have speculated that Super will take place Post Battle of Gods and before the newest movie 'Resurrection F', But I personally believe that it's safe to say that with the synopsis of Dragon Ball Super's first episode that the series, at least in its first episode, will actually be a prequel to Battle of Gods. Here are the things that have me to believe that.
The first bit of news (And the one that sites are also picking up on) is the constant mentioning of the defeat of Majin Buu and outside of the latest trailer mentioning Beerus, there hasn't been much word on the type of role he'll play in the trailers to this new series. He's just been shown a couple of times in the series. Another thing to note is Goku's becoming a Radish farmer. If we flash back to the year of 2008, there was an OVA released called "Yo! Son Goku and his Friends Return!!" In which it was seen that Goku and his family have been growing Radishes for some time, and the outfit Goku wore in the Super trailer was very similar to what he wore in that OVA. Combine this with the first ep of Super's synopsis, it seems like this show will be the precursor to the "Returns" OVA which will be a precursor to BOG.
If we ignore the detail that Gohan and Videl weren't married by the time of the 2008 OVA (And Toriyama tends to forget story details & characters) then this makes total sense!
The final thing that I have that pieces this prequel theory together is that Goten is finding a present for Videl in the first episode as he is SOON to be a brother-in-law. This (Obviously) implies that Gohan and Videl haven't been married yet whereas in Battle of Gods, it seemed that the two were already married; not only that, but Videl was pregnant in the movie and so far Super hasn't made any mentions of little Pan anywhere so I'm assuming that the events of BOG between Gohan and Videl have yet to happen.
Speculation time for now is over peeps. Now we talk about the characters from the Dragon Ball roster that are confirmed to be making their way back to Super (at least for the time being). As we can see in the picture above, we have Hercule, Majin Buu, Master Roshi, and Chi-Chi. Not only that, but we will see the return Gotenks, the fusion of Goten in Trunks, in this series (Most likely in the first episode).
The final noteworthy piece to inform you all of is the confirmation of Beerus and Whiss in the series and also the introduction of two new characters: Champa and his mentor/assistant that has yet to be named.
As we can see Both Champa and his lady assistant have looks very similar to Beerus and Whiss, and it's not confirmed yet what the characters are. Speculations are that Champa is a God of Destruction much like Beerus or that he and Beerus are actually related. Considering Toriyama and his more simple style of character designs, I'm banking on the former instead of the latter. As we can see in the trailer, the two don't quite see eye-to-eye.
If I can bring back my 'Prequel' theory from earlier in this post, while the early episodes of Super will take place before Battle of Gods, I believe the scenes involving Beerus and Champa himself will in fact take place after Resurrection F. SPOILERS TO THOSE WHO HAVEN'T RESURRECTION F, SKIP TO LAST PARAGRAPH IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED LIKE I HAVE.
In Resurrection F, Frieza blew up the Earth, and Whis had to go back in time so that Goku would stop Frieza from doing that. I believe that Champa yelling at Beerus was him being pissed at both Beerus and Whis for sparing the Earth from destruction twice (The first time being in Battle of Gods when Beerus didn't blow up the Earth); and because of this, Champa may decide to go to the planet himself and take care of the Earth, thus lending credence to the whole "Enemy stronger than Majin Buu" statement when the series was first announced.
With a week left before Super's premiere in Japan. there's still a lot to speculate and theorize on in regards of what the plans for the series are. All we can do is patiently wait and see where this newest chapter in the Dragon Ball legacy takes us.
Til next time folks, I'm The Shaman of Animation.
Take Care...
